WHY - Step 1 is our favorite part of the Korean skincare routine. It begins with a 2-step cleansing process. Step 1 includes a cleansing oil to completely remove all make-up, dirt, pollution, and oil from your skin.
HOW - Apply cleansing oil to your skin in a gentle circular motion to remove all makeup including eye and lip. Gently wipe away with a wipe or a cotton pad.
FAVES - We love Banila Clean it Zero, a lightweight whipped cleaning oil that many cult followers refer to as a cleansing sorbet. Don't let the fluffiness fool you - this cleanser gets down to business.
Step 2 - Foaming Cleanser
WHY - This is the second step in the 2-step cleansing routine. A foaming cleanser gently foams and forms tons of tiny bubbles to remove all residue, oil, and anything that may have been left behind from step 1.
HOW - Apply a small dime-sized amount to the palm of your hands and work into a nice lather. Apply to your face in gentle circular motions. Wash completely with warm water and pat face dry with a towel.
WHY - It's important to rebalance the pH of your skin before applying products to your face. When you wash your face, your skin is more alkaline. A toner is either neutral or slightly acidic to help rebalance your skin to bring it back to a more neutral state. This neutralized state can help your skin to better absorb and benefit from subsequent steps in the routine.
HOW - To apply toner, there are 2 different approaches. You can apply a few drops of toner to a cotton pad to remove more dirt and debris from your skin. Or, you can apply your toner via a misting bottle and gently pat the toner on your face.
FAVES - We are obsessed with O HUI's The First line because of its primary ingredient - rHSCP(recombinant Human Stem Cell Protein). This toner has a thicker consistency and can be used as a toner and essence in one. We are obsessed with this product and use it on heavy rotation morning, day, and night.
Step 4 - Essence
WHY - An essence can be considered somewhere between a toner and a serum. They are packed with nutrients and vitamins to improve overall skin tone, hydrate, restore, and reduce fine lines.
HOW - Essence is applied directly to the skin. Apply a few drops to the palms of your hands and gently pat onto your face.
WHY - Step 5 is all about layering multiple serums and ampoules to target specific skin concerns and needs. The Korean skincare philosophy doesn't limit the number of serums or ampoules that you can layer, but we recommend no more than 2-3.
HOW - Apply a few drops to your finger tips and gently pat the serum/ampoule all over your skin. Use your fingers to lightly drum the product into your skin to allow for massage and absorption.
WHY - The skin around your eyes is the most thin and delicate skin around your face which is why it's important to hydrate, nourish, and moisturize this area. Eye cream has many different benefits and can delivery hydration and collagen to your skin.
HOW - Gently apply eye cream using the tips of your ring fingers and gently drum the product around your eye area. Be careful not to tug or pull the skin which can lead to wrinkles and crow's feet.
FAVES - We love Mizon Collagen Firming Eye cream because it lifts wrinkles and improves skin elasticity.
Step 7 - Moisturizer
WHY - The Korean skincare philosophy believes that hydration is the key to preventing skin from aging and wrinkling. Moisturizer can include emulsions and creams. Depending on your skin type, an emulsion and a cream can be used both day and night (but a moisturizer that contains SPF is not recommended for nighttime use).
HOW - Apply your moisturizer directly to your face. Pat gently to help absorb.
FAVES - We love Skinfood's Yuza Water Cream because it contains organic Goheung yuja extract that moisturizes and keeps skin hydrated but is light enough to use all year round.
Step 8 - Sunscreen (Daytime Only)
WHY - Sunscreen is essential in preventing your skin from aging and should be worn everyday. We recommend selecting a sunscreen that includes UVA/UVB protection.
HOW - After steps 1-6, apply sunscreen directly by patting the product gently onto your face. Sunscreen should be worn before applying makeup.
FAVES - We love Laniege Sun Block Supreme because it acts as the perfect matte makeup base, while moisturizing the skin all day.
Step 9 - Exfoliate (Twice a week)
WHY - It is important to exfoliate skin on a regular basis to help turn over skin cells and rejuvenate your skin. We recommend exfoliating your skin with a gentle exfoliant 2 times per week.
HOW - After cleansing (steps 1 and 2), use a gentle exfoliator on your face by making gentle circular motions. If you are using an exfoliating gel, follow the specific product instructions.
FAVES - We are in love with Aquareveal's Satin Bright Soft Water Peel. This product is specially formulated with Hyaluronic Acid and nourishing botanicals to maintain skin's natural moisture levels while effectively and visibly sweeping away dead skin cells.
Step 10 - Sheet Masks (Twice a week)
WHY - Sheet masks are your super charged dose of vitamins, nutrients, and hydration for your skin. Using sheet masks on a regular basis will help your skin feel and look rejuvenated and brighter.
HOW - We recommend using sheet masks twice a week, following an exfoliating step. Open the package and apply the sheet mask to your face and remove before it is dry. Gently pat your skin to absorb all of the essence/ampoule from the mask.
FAVES - Sure, we're biased but we love all of the masks that we carry at SKYN BOX. Check out each box by skin type to find a beautifully curated set of masks that are optimized for each season.
